Summit of Winnats Pass

Following a major landslip at Mam Tor in 1977 which resulted in the closure of the old A625 trans-Pennine road, Winnats Pass became the only route linking Castleton with the west. The spectacular gorge is thought to have been created by the waters of a huge lagoon, possibly released by an earthquake.
