The only surviving structures of the former Blackburn Meadows Power Station, the twin cooling towers have become an instantly recognisable Sheffield landmark. Despite this, however, the towers have been teetering on the edge of demolition for several years, saved only by their close proximity to Tinsley Viaduct which carries the M1 motorway across the Don Valley.
Recent strengthening work on the viaduct has now made the towers' demolition a more realistic prospect. Their owners, E.On, have made it clear they intend to bring them down to make way for a new biomass power station on the site, although a date for demolition had not been confirmed as of September 2007.
Update: the towers were finally demolished at 3am on Sunday 24 August 2008.
