Whilst out near Higger Tor photographing another panoramic scene, I saw the Yorkshire Air Ambulance circle low over Stanage Edge in the distance and hover next to the rock face for a few minutes. I immediately packed up my gear, jumped back in the car and drove down to get a closer look.
When I arrived the helicopter had landed next to the rock face, and I discovered from other climbers that a guy had fallen and the Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams had called for the airlift to hospital. They suspected a broken pelvis.
Knowing that the helicopter would be lifting off again at any moment, I hurriedly set up my gear to capture the scene. I timed it so that I managed to get the chopper as it lifted off, but in my haste to set up I didn't manage to select the best zoom on the telephoto lens I was using.
After it lifted off, the heli flew down to the road and landed right next to where I was stood, allowing me to capture some close-up shots and another panoramic image. They chose to carry the casualty down on a stretcher, and after they loaded him aboard they took off to the hospital. I hope he recovered OK!
